Student Success Secrets: 8 Time Management Tips You Need to Know

Time management is something most of us struggle with on a daily basis. Managing your time wisely and staying on task is a skill that can be invaluable to a college student. Below are a few steps that I have implemented in my own life that can make time management, as a college student, more obtainable.

Use a calendar or set reminders

With all the resources we have available, finding a suitable calendar for your lifestyle shouldn’t be a problem. All cell phones have calendars on them that even let you set reminders. If you are slightly old-fashion, I bet your bookstore has an agenda you can purchase if you prefer to write things down.

Remove distractions

This includes your cell phone! You can get so much accomplished by putting your phone on do not disturb for at least an hour. Even if you just close your dorm room door and unplug. You will be amazed at how much you can accomplish.

Don’t Multitask

Multitasking can be good in some instances but if you are working on anything of importance, it needs to have your complete attention. The conscious mind can only truly focus on one thing at a time.

Keep your space clean & organized

Keeping your space clean and organized can lower your stress level. College is stressful enough and this is just one way to help keep your stress level low.  Stress can cause you to overeat, lose sleep and it also inhibits the mind from truly working at its optimal capacity.

Get in a routine

Routines have a way of simplifying many aspects of your life. If you have a set time everyday that you are getting up, going to the gym, or are unplugging, it helps tremendously with time management. Use a time blocking system in your calendar. Block hours of time for the things you need to accomplish and stick to it. This may seem like a simple thing, but it has huge advantages if you schedule your day in advance. There will be no wasted time wondering what should I be doing right now. You have a plan and a schedule for the day to refer back to.

Prioritize your tasks

When giving each of your task a set importance, it will help knock out some of your most important task. As Mark Twain said, “Eat a live frog every morning, and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day”. In other words, tackle the hardest task first and the rest will be a breeze.

Plan ahead

Start planning your day the night before. This can help you stay on task and know what the day has planned as soon as you get up.

Set goals

Setting goals will make staying on task motivating.  Studies have shown that you are more likely to complete a goal if you write them down. This helps you hold yourself accountable. One the most important things with setting goals is that you have detailed strategies of accomplishing the goals and set timelines to track your progress and accomplish the goal.
