Discover Paradise: Your Ultimate Guide to Anna Maria Island
When I graduated, I wanted to go somewhere tropical since I had never been anywhere in the Caribbean or any island for that matter. I wanted the clear blue water that only the Caribbean seemed to offer…..or so I thought. I brought up a map on Google of Florida, I went straight for the Keys because of the distinct blue water surrounding the tip of Florida. After searching for what seemed like hours for a house we could rent, I decided the Keys might be a little too far to drive. Then I started looking at the Gulf of Mexico and worked my way up. I landed on a little island called Anna Maria Island. It’s not too far from Tampa and is made up of three different small towns on one island. The water looked amazing and the pictures from previous visitors were spectacular.
Where to stay
We rented a home through VRBO only two blocks from the beach. It had a swimming pool, 4 bicycles, a beach cart, beach chairs and even a cooler. Everything we needed already there. The house was adorable and had all the amenities of home. One thing, if you are looking for a party scene, a ton of bars, clubs and teen/college age students, this is not the destination for you. I could get all of that at home. I wanted a slower pace for this trip and Anna Maria Island is a slow-pace, laid back, slice of paradise.
Anna Maria Island is about 10 hours from home. It was a very easy, mostly interstate drive. If you have more than a few days to spend somewhere, you can really get to know the area. We mostly ate at the house so we didn’t try too many restaurants while we there, but the few we did try were very good. The Beach House restaurant is right on the beach and has great seafood and for non-seafood fans, they have plenty of chicken and steak dishes as well. Two Scoops is an ice cream and candy shop that was on our radar every night. The SandBar was also a great place, good service and good food.
What to do
One of the fun activities that they have on the island is renting a golf cart. Most of the island is golf cart friendly. We had a blast riding around and seeing all the gorgeous homes and different beach views. One evening, if not every evening, you need to make your way to Bean Point. This was the place to be at sunset!! I don’t know that I have ever seen such an array of color. One particular evening, it had just come a thunderstorm and we went there right after. The sky was putting on quite the display and show of color. It’s a can’t miss!
We rented a boat and went out on Sarasota Bay. This was the first time for us not renting a pontoon and going for the flashy speed boat instead. We soon regretted this after getting on the water. It was uncomfortable, not a lot of room, nowhere to lay out and just relax, I wont make that mistake again. We were able to pull up to a little restaurant and grab lunch, but towards the end of the day a storm came up and cut our time on the water short. The scenery was beautiful and I do recommend the boat rental, but not a speed boat unless you have less than 4 people.
Our days were spent going to the beach, lounging by the pool, grilling out, and just complete relaxation. After returning home, I was ready to tackle my summer before heading off to school!
