Home Office Productivity Pro: 5 Techniques For Laser Focus

I recently began my first job telecommuting and I love it! While I get to work from home, this does not mean I spend my days working and doing personal things on the side. Distractions were the number one thing I had to eliminate when I started my job and I am going to let you in on a few things that helped me stay focused throughout the day!

Have a Designated Workspace

First and foremost, you MUST have a designated work space. If you are working in the bed, on the couch, or at the kitchen counter there are all sorts of distractions that can pull your attention away from your work. Try finding a space that is not an area that is in constant use. A corner in your bedroom or a spare room. My grandfather turned a storage shed out in his backyard into his new office space. There is no limit to where you can work, as long as you can separate yourself from the day-to-day in your house.

Keep it Tidy

Always make sure your workspace is neat. This will help keep your stress levels low throughout the day. I can not focus when my desk is covered up with junk. I like to have a couple of inspiring photos, a notepad, pens, and a candle on my desk. That’s it! Keep it simple and clean.

Do Not Disturb

One thing I have to do on a daily basis is put my phone on Do Not Disturb. When I clock in, Do Not Disturb goes on. Some people in your life won’t understand that just because you work from home doesn’t mean you can chat all day. Putting my phone on Do Not Disturb ensures I can stay focused on my job. Now if you use your phone for work, well you will have to be more selective when you answer. Friends and family can wait until after the work day. Don’t let constant interruptions jeopardize your focus and your work.

Take a Break

I can get so focused sometimes I forget to take a break to let my eyes rest. Taking a break can help you refocus on the tasks ahead. Step outside, take a deep breath and let your mind rest for a minute. You will do better work if you have multiple short breaks throughout the day.

Keep Tabs to a Minimum

Working from home can involve multitasking, but don’t let that stray your mind from what you are supposed to be working on. This means no Facebook, Instagram, or Pinterest tabs open during work hours. This is the best way to ensure you don’t become distracted from getting your work done.

I hope some of these tips will help you become more focused and I know that if you can put in several of these disciplined actions, I believe you can be just as focused at home as in the office.
